VCU Jazz Presents Two Faculty Recitals This Week

Antonio Garcia, Director of Jazz Studies at VCU, presents his annual faculty recital this Sunday, February 17, at 4 pm in the Performing Arts Center. Garcia describes the event as “A post-Mardi Gras, post-Valentine’s concert celebration of original, standard, and New Orleans music for solo, small, and large jazz ensembles”. Performing will be VCU’s Jazz Orchestra I, the Greater Richmond High School Jazz Band, and the newest addition to the VCU Jazz faculty, guitarist Adam Larrabee. The recital will showcase Garcia’s talents on trombone, vocals, percussion, piano, and composing/arranging. As in past years, Garcia’s recital is sure to be a well-programmed, entertaining, and impressive afternoon with the man behind VCU Jazz.

Internationally acclaimed trumpeter and VCU Professor of Trumpet and Jazz Trumpet Rex Richardson’s recital will be held on Wednesday, February 20, at 8 pm. Richardson’s 2007 recital packed the concert hall with a show of all-star musicians in a tribute to recently passed saxophonist Michael Brecker. Richardson gave much of the spotlight to saxophonist J.C. Kuhl, who paid homage to the legendary musician. Also joining Richardson and Kuhl were Daniel Clarke, Trey Pollard, Curtis Fye, and Brian Jones. As for who will be on the stage this Wednesday, that has not been publicly announced; but Richardson always puts together a cast of top-notch players.
