Led by Eric Maynor’s 33 points, nine rebounds and four assists, VCU came from behind in the second half to win on the road at Hofstra: VCU 66, Hofstra 62.

On the radio after the game, VCU head coach Anthony Grant mentioned that several of his players had a “bug” and fought through it. Grant said that going into the contest he knew Maynor might have to play all 40 minutes, which he did.

“A great team-win,” said Grant.

VCU improved to 16-6 overall and 9-2 in the Colonial Athletic Association with the victory. The loss snapped Hofstra’s four-game winning streak and dropped the Pride to 14-8 overall and 6-5 in the Colonial. CAA leader Northeastern (15-6, 10-1 in CAA) also won today, so the Rams remain in second place in the league.

Maynor scored 11 consecutive points, midway in the second half, to knot the score at 50 apiece. Later a 6-0 run by Maynor run gave VCU a six-point working margin with 1:42 on the clock. A minute later Maynor found Bradford Burgess wide open; the freshman from Benedictine dunked to reestablish the six-point lead.

Burgess added 11 points and Joey Rodriguez had four steals for the Rams. VCU held Hofstra to just 25 percent (7-of-28) shooting in the second half. That, while the Rams hit 50 percent (14-of-28) of their shots from the field after intermission.

VCU returns to action on Wed., Feb. 4, when the Rams will play the Seahawks at UNC Wilmington at 7 p.m.
