Theatre VCU”s The Elephant Man

Sat Feb 18 7:30 pm
The Elephant Man Written by Bernard Pomerance • Directed by Casey Biggs What is normal? Do you feel different? John Merrick was so grotesquely deformed that women fainted in horror at the sight of him. Dr. Federick Treves rescues John Merrick, n the world of 1880’s Victorian England’s freak shows. Merrick is discovered to be a highly intelligent, sensitive and artistic man. Based on fact, this Tony award-winning play, explores the notion of what and who is normal and how in a world of hypocrisy we may be persuaded to question our own quality of mercy. Feb. 16 -18 – 7:30 pm • Feb. 19 – 3:00 pm

FilmRoasters @ Firehouse

Sun Feb 19 8:00 pm
Once a month, the FilmRoasters slowly incinerate a cinematic achievement over a pit of microphone-fueled mockery. November’s guest of honor is The Day the Earth Stood Still. As usual, the FilmRoasters will be helping to cushion the pain of sitting through the movie by providing our own improv comedy commentary track during the film.

The next show is February 19. Tickets to the show are only $5, and all proceeds will be donated to the Firehouse Theatre Project. Doors will open at 8 p.m. and the movie will begin within the hour.

End of an Era: The Photography of Jack Jeffers

Mon Feb 20 8:00 pm
This exhibition displays large-format black-and-white prints of people and landscapes from the Appalachian region of western Virginia taken by award-winning photographer Jack Jeffers. Before Jeffers moved to Wyoming, the Virginia artist donated 123 monumental images to the Virginia Historical Society. Jeffers stated in 1996, “What you have represents almost thirty years of my life. Much of what I have recorded is already past history and most of the people I photographed are either dead or close to it.” Opens February 20, 2012 @ Virginia Historical Society

Flight Night @ Secco

Mon Feb 20 7:00 pm
Trying new things is like hitting the refresh button on our existence: it delivers us from complacency, engages our senses and forces us to question our tastes, values and, in turn, our very nature. Yet, more often than not, most of us will opt for the familiar over the unknown. Every Monday.
