Suspect Arrested For Weapons Violations
CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA – A man has been arrested and charged with weapons violations in connection with a suspicious incident at a church. Police responded to Macedonia Tabernacle Church in the 3600 block of East River Road at about 1 p.m. today for a report of a person who had been in possession of a weapon. Police learned the suspect had attended the church service. Upon its conclusion, he opened a backpack and retrieved some personal items. Church members noticed the bag contained what appeared to be a hand gun and were able to retrieve it. The weapon was, in fact, a BB gun. The suspect was detained without incident until police arrived. Christopher A. Smith, 24, of the 100 block of Hanover Avenue in Colonial Heights, was charged with carrying a dangerous weapon to a place of religious worship and with possession of a concealed weapon by a convicted felon. He is being held in the Chesterfield County Jail pending a pretrial hearing on March 16.
