The new 1st District School Board representative Glen Sturtevant has posted a piece on the new RPS budget:

Here’s a link to the RPS administration’s document showing how the RVA School Board balanced the budget: http://bit.ly/Y5pkQF.

Because there is too much bureaucracy at Central Office, I asked that the administration find the savings internally to provide a 10% raise for teachers. I ultimately couldn’t get those concessions from Central Office, but we did get about a 16% cut in Central Office’s $40 million budget. That will help provide about a 4% raise for teachers, which includes both an elimination of the furlough days and additional funding from the Governor and General Assembly. We were also able to avoid big increases to class sizes as the administration had originally proposed.

In light of those cuts at Central Office, I’m going to cut my own School Board stipend by what we cut at Central Office and donate that money to the PTAs of Munford, Hill, and TJ.
