State Police investigating hit-and-run that caused four car pileup at I-64 and Glenside

Witnesses say Wednesday evening accident was caused by driver using cell phone.

Virginia State Police continue to investigate a hit-and-run that caused a multi-vehicle accident Wednesday afternoon on Interstate 64 near the Glenside Drive exit.

According to police, a black SUV, possibly a Jeep according to witnesses, collided with a Saturn around 5:20 PM, causing a chain reaction. The Saturn then hit an Isuzu SUV, which spun around and collided with a Honda. The wreck allegedly resulted from the first driver using a cell phone.

One driver was transported to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

All three lanes of Interstate 64 were closed through the remainder of rush hour until around 7:00 PM, causing a three-mile backup, according to VDOT.

Police are on the lookout for the first driver, who caused the pileup, driving a black SUV or Jeep. Witnesses say the vehicle’s Virginia license plate started with ‘VAG.’

Why aren’t there traffic cameras at this interchange between highways? There’s a significant accident at least once a week.
