WHAT DOES YOUR START-UP BUSINESS DO?

Speed Guard is a device that allows a vehicle owner to dynamically control the maximum speed one’s car can travel, based on the current road (or other settings). It was originally designed to ease the concerns of safety for parents of teen drivers, and lower the liability associated with vehicle fleets. It can appeal to car sharing services and speeding ticket conscious drivers, too. The device can also warn vehicle owners about a change in operating conditions in the vehicle and describe the reasons that a check engine light is on — in some cases saving hundreds in auto shop costs ($45 alone to read the diagnostics). Additionally, the device is capable of collecting data about the road (currently, an untapped resource in aggregate).

HOW DID YOUR VENTURE START?

The road is a dangerous place, especially with all the distractions out there today – increasing safety on one of those dimensions could help reduce the amount of road accidents every year. And I drive a lot from Richmond to DC, so I’m paranoid about speeding tickets. Thinking through the additional places where a device like this could be useful got me really excited, so I explored the idea. I found that the competition’s limited solutions are clunky and don’t offer the option for vehicle owners to have true control.

HOW WILL YOU USE THE $10,000 CASH PRIZE TO HELP YOUR START-UP?

As I finished developing my prototype, I’ll use the cash to take my idea to the production stage, and add further protection to my legal interests.
