The coast-to-coast primetime stage was set in Philadelphia. The ball was in Eric Maynor’s hands.  UCLA’s defense was too sticky. Maynor’s desperate fall-away shot came up short: UCLA 65, VCU 64.

All night long, shots that could have fallen for the Rams, should have fallen, just didn’t. Easy opportunities weren’t cashed in and UCLA needed that. There was nothing deficient in VCU’s effort.

Rams head coach Anthony Grant used his resources as best he could. UCLA’s defense was probably too strong for some of the younger VCU players. This observation does not apply to junior T.J. Gwynn, who came off the bench and didn’t back off an inch.

Maynor, who scored 21 points to lead all scorers, was the only VCU senior on the floor. It showed.
