Saxon Shoes helps needy kids start the school year on the right foot

Local shoe store partners with the YMCA’s Bright Beginnings program for 22nd year in a row.

A local shoe store is doing its part to make sure children from low-income families go back to school on the right foot. This week, nearly 200 kids in need will receive new shoes from Saxon Shoes as part of the YMCA Bright Beginnings program. It is the 22nd year the West End store has taken part in the program.

The program provides financial assistance–to families who qualify–for summer camps and child care. As part of Bright Beginnings, children are paired with adult volunteers, who take them to local department stores to shop for back to school clothes and other essentials. The children who benefit from the Saxon Shoes donation spend the money that they would have spent on shoes on other clothing.

“We started working with Bright Beginnings about 7 years ago and we love it. The children come in so excited for their fitting and walk out all smiles with a new pair of shoes for back to school,” said Amanda Weiner, Special Projects Coordinator for Saxon. “All of the staff that work with these kids really enjoy it. It has to be one of our favorite times of the year.”

“The YMCA is grateful to once again work with Saxon Shoes for YMCA Bright Beginnings,” said Katie Gholson, YMCA Director of Community Engagement. “This program not only gives children the supplies they need for the upcoming school year, but it provides them with a level of confidence that is invaluable.”
