What does your start-up business do?

First and foremost, we aim to complete projects, such as data entry and quality assurance, that are a tedious yet necessary part of all business in a cost-effective way. In addition, we aim to teach adults on the autism spectrum vocational, social, and independent living skills.

How did your venture start?

After spending more than a decade teaching students with autism, I, along with the students and their families, became frustrated with their lack of success in finding, obtaining, keeping, and finding satisfaction in a job. However, many people on the autism spectrum have amazing gifts to offer an employer, such as acute attention to detail, exceptional memories, and a talent for excelling at repetitive tasks. These traits are extremely valuable in the workforce, but are often accompanied by interfering social barriers or communication challenges common amongst people with autism. Richmond Autism Connection aims to match people with autism to Richmond based companies that are in need of data entry and quality assurance tasks.

How will you use the $10,000 cash prize to help your start-up?

The money would be spent on development of a website that matches the needs of Richmond-based companies and organizations to the skills possessed by the potential employees on the autism spectrum.
