New Orleans-based trombonist Jeff Albert and his quartet are performing on Saturday night at Bogart’s for Richmond Summer Brass Fest, along with No BS! Brass, Verbatim, and R2Dtoo. On Monday, he was interviewed at The Jazz Session, an offshoot site of All About Jazz.

In the interview, he talks about how he believes that the best kind of music requires some work on the audience’s part. But he goes on to say, “I don’t feel like the audience needs to be working hard all the time. It’s just like your normal day at the office: you’re not always working real hard. The set should be the same way… It’s like, we’re going to play something that you’re going to have to work really hard at, but afterward it’s ok to laugh, or to shake your butt or just have a nice, relaxed, funny moment.

“If we start to eliminate emotions or feelings from the palette of what’s available to us, I think we’re doing a disservice… We should be able to be comedians and jokesters and goofy party people. Just because we’re free jazz musicians doesn’t mean we should ignore other aspects of our life.”

Jeff should fit in just fine.
