From the police dept: Inoperative motor vehicles have been lingering throughout Petersburg, VA at unusually high rates. City Codes prohibit such. On private property, vehicles must have current Virginia inspection stickers and DMV registration and appear to be operative. Thus, vehicles on cinder blocks, wrecked, missing engine components and anything else deeming the vehicle inoperative is in violation of Petersburg City Code 110-471. From the date of official posted notice, owners have 15 days to comply, have the vehicle removed, or stored with a hard sided building. Car covers or tarps do not meet the terms of the code.

In addition, on city property, the same conditions apply; however, the owner has 24 hours to remove the vehicle or correct the deficiencies stated under Petersburg City Code 110-258.

After the grace period, vehicles are towed and stored at the owner’s expense.

Property owners can have vehicles towed immediately by signing a private property release form obtained by calling Petersburg Police at 732-4222 and making a request.

Citizens can help relieve the City of blight by confidentially calling the nonemergency number 732-4222 and reporting inoperative motor vehicles. We can make a measurable difference in the City with citizen cooperation.

Contact Sgt. Sheldon Wills at 732-4222 or Esther Hyatt at 479-6248 for more information.
