In the media room inside the Siegel Center Thursday night, Virginia Commonwealth University men’s head basketball coach Anthony Grant put it plainly, “We were fortunate to win.”

Coaches frequently say that sort of thing, but this time – having just dealt with the slowdown tactics of the 18.5-point underdog Georgia State Panthers – coach Grant had good reason to feel fortunate. Trailing by two points with two seconds left in the game, the gritty Panthers took the last shot of the night. While the ball rose toward the rim, the visitors still had a chance to steal the game. When Trae Goldston’s awkward jumper fell a foot short, most in the partisan crowd of 5,000-plus breathed a big sigh of relief. Final score: VCU 49, Georgia State 47…
