1) Petersburg principal Phyllis Byrd earns Doctorate

The Petersburg City Public Schools proudly announces that Phyllis Byrd, principal of A.P. Hill Elementary School in Petersburg, has earned her Doctorate degree, in Educational Leadership, from Virginia State University. She is part of the second cohort of graduate students to obtain this degree since VSU began offering the program just a few years ago.

Dr. Byrd has been a member of the Petersburg City Public Schools family for 15 years, and an educator for 18 years total. She started in the city as an aide at Peabody Middle School.

“To be a true educator, you have to hone your skills. It’s necessary to get all the knowledge you can to empower teachers and students. If we want our students to be life-long learners, we have to be role models for them. It’s never too late to learn,” Dr. Byrd said.

“I thank the citizens and community of Petersburg for affording me this opportunity to grow,” she said.
