1) Petersburg National Battlefield Caravan Tours Focus on the Battle of Peebles’ Farm

On Saturday, September 27 and Sunday, September 28 caravan tours will depart from Poplar Grove National Cemetery located at stop #11 of the Petersburg National Battlefield driving tour. The departure time is 1:00 p.m. on both days.

The Battle of Peebles’ Farm is one of the lesser known battles of the siege of Petersburg; however, the level of tragedy was high, with a combined casualty number of over 4,000 men. The objective of the Union attack was to conquer the last of the Confederate supply lines coming into Petersburg; the Boydton Plank Road and the South Side Railroad. By taking part in this tour visitors will understand why the attack failed and learn about some of the most significant soldiers involved in the battle.

2) City Point Archaeology Lecture Scheduled for Appomattox Regional Library

On Saturday, September 27 National Park Service archaeologist Julia Steele will present a lecture on archaeology at City Point (Hopewell), Virginia. The program begins at 2:00 p.m. at the Appomattox Regional Library and will feature artifacts uncovered during past digs.

City Point is arguably one of the most historic communities in the United States. In the past, archaeological digs have been conducted by students and faculty from the College of William and Mary and the University of Maryland. Artifacts provide insight into the people who have lived on this peninsula throughout the ages including the Civil War, the Revolutionary War and hundreds of years prior.

There is no charge for this program. For more information, please call Ann Blumenschine at
(804) 732-3531 ext. 203.
