A group of Petersburg City Public Schools middle school educators first took part in the College of William and Mary’s CLASS (Content Literacy Assessment, Standards and Strategies) Academy program, and now have shared what they learned with their colleagues in the Petersburg City Public Schools.

The all-day seminar, held during the summer at Old Towne Catering in Petersburg, was entitled, “Teaching With Class.”

Involved were Dr. Ermerlina Binuya, Vernon Johns Middle School (VJMS) sixth grade math teacher; along with Danielle Davis (Special Education); Jewell Booker (7th grade math); Shanda Sears (7th grade science); Sheree Lewis (6th grade history); Calisa Hawkes (6th grade science); Jennifer Pride (7th grade English); Tenille Smith (7th grade history); Tawanna Harris (7th grade English); and Jimmie Monroe (6th grade math) from VJMS.

These PCPS educators enrolled in a year-long professional development workshop series (Project CLASS -Content Literacy: Assessments, Standards and Strategies), funded by the State Council for Higher Education of Virginia (SCHEV), emphasizing the engagement of middle school students while linking student instruction to student learning. Teachers collaborate, develop lessons, and utilize research-based strategies learned in academy sessions.

Lesson plans that reflect best practices in all core content areas, are what everyone should bring out of the sessions.

It is part of the Petersburg City Public Schools continuing mission to become a World Class School Division.
