For the second year in a row, the hard-charging Peabody Middle School Girls Basketball Team has won the Fall Line district-level championship. These 14 scholar-athletes, led by Head Coach Carolyn Woodson and Manager Jessica Jones, a Peabody Honor Roll student, span the spectrum from sixth to eighth grade.

They earned their trophy with a close win over the Prince George Royals on November 6. It was a tough game that saw the Lady Lions claw their way back from a 13 point deficit in the third quarter to a 39-39 tie, with Melicia James popping a three pointer to even out the scoreboard. The Lady Lions then took the lead and claimed a 40-39 victory, with Shacira Alexander scoring the last two points of the game.

The Royals had been undefeated in the season and had pounded the Lady Lions twice before the final game.

“We work hard to keep disciplined, and we keep attitudes off the court,” said team member Ja’Kara White.

This year’s team consists of Markayla Hicks, Diamond Mayes, Monique Green, Nikitria Smith, Tynnetta Tucker, Shacira Alexander, Shamori Blackwell, Rashella Callahan, Tequanne Moore, Jameka Scott; Honor Roll students Tiera Smith, Aaliyah Nicholson and Ja’Kara White; and straight-A student Melicia James. Diamond Sampson is Scorekeeper.

Ja’Kara White, Melicia James and Nikitria Smith have earned All-Tournament status.
