1) PHS football game rescheduled

Due to the possibility of severe weather this Friday, the date of the Varsity football game between George Wythe High School and Petersburg High School (PHS), has been changed. The game, which was originally scheduled for Friday, September 5, has been RESCHEDULED for THURSDAY, September 4, at 7:30 p.m., at PHS.

2) PCPS honors retirees

The Petersburg City Public Schools honored its retirees of 2007 and 2008 with a banquet held at the Lee Club on Fort Lee.

According to Dr. Patrick Bingham, Petersburg City Public Schools Human Resources Director, the retirees together have given 734½ years of service to the community.

The most important role of a teacher is to give hope, said Brigadier General Jessie R. Cross, keynote speaker at the banquet.

“You can’t be an educator without a kind and generous heart,” Cross added.

The retirees included Mable Thorne – who had 43 years of service, Ruth Howard — who had 40 years of service, Virginia Taylor, Lynda Jones, Geraldine Gaines, Sylvia Wright, Emilie Morring, Frances Sykes, John Mayo Sr., Betty Wooten, Edward Wilson, James Ransom Sr., Mary Hannon and Minnie Hester.
