“With This Ring: A Portrait of Marriage”

June 2 – July 27, 2008

Charlottesville photographer Mary Motley Kalergis used her camera with both subtlety and honesty to capture images of Southern married couples of all ages, races and social levels. She also interviewed her subjects and shares some of their insights within the context of the exhibition. In 41 photographs, the viewer experiences the many faces of marriage, from young bright-eyed couples just starting on the road of their dreams to comfortable old partners whose days are wrapped around each other in a mutual journey.

The VMFA Pauley Center on the museum’s campus is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“The Alchemy of Pots & Prints III”

June 6 – August 15, 2008

This exhibition presents recent ceramics and prints by Studio School students of resident potter Steven Glass and printmakers Mary Holland and Chris Palmer.

The prints on display are primarily monotypes – a hybrid process of painting and printmaking. It is a spontaneous medium, which results in varied surfaces, similar to those of glazed surfaces in high-fired and wood-fired pottery. The pottery on display includes hand-build and wheel-thrown pieces. This exhibition compares and contrasts the unique and beautiful surfaces possible in creating pots and prints.

The VMFA Studio School is at 2911 Grove Ave. in Richmond. The Studio School galleries are open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
