Budget considerations have led the city’s Department of Public Works to combine its traditional two collection cycle for leaves:

The City’s Department of Public Works is implementing a new leaf collection program that will save the City an estimated $291,000 annually in human and equipment resources. The new leaf collection program will begin December 1 and run through January 30.

The new program will cut vacuum service from a 22-week, two-cycle program, to a 10-week, one-cycle program. To take advantage of the vacuum service, residents should rake their leaves to the curb. Do not rake leaves into the street, ditches, pipes or culverts.

The Department has determined that starting the collection later in the season will make it feasible to do one vacuum collection instead of two, since the majority of leaves in the City fall in December and January. This is evident by last year’s 13,152 tons of leaves collected in December and January compared to 8,023 tons collected in November and February.

Collection dates for North Richmond neighborhoods are as follows:

Bellevue/Ginter Park/Washington Park: December 15 through 26
Northside/Highland Park: January 26 through 30
