Robin Farmer, writing for Media General News Service, has some more details on the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation library grants available to the Ginter Park and North Avenue libraries:

Twice a week, David Lynch of Richmond uses the Ginter Park Library’s wireless Internet access to work on his laptop.

Learning Tuesday that the branch was eligible to apply for a grant provided by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to buy more computers delighted him.

“Many people can’t afford the Internet access. More computers gives them a good outlet and exposure,” said Lynch, as he stood outside the North Richmond branch.

A $936,000 grant will help 102 libraries statewide receive 567 computers once they meet the grant requirements, the Library of Virginia announced yesterday.

“These grants will help public libraries throughout the commonwealth provide their communities with services that are vitally important in our information-driven society,” said Sandra G. Treadway, librarian of Virginia.

“The grants will allow libraries in areas of highest need to replace and add computer workstations for patrons.”

The grants will be administered through the Library of Virginia.
