Martin’s announces plans to close Dumbarton Square store

The store, which opened in 1972, was the first Ukrop’s supermarket north of the James River.

From Richmond.com:

Martin’s Food Markets is closing its store in the Dumbarton Square shopping center on Staples Mill Road.

The store at 7129 Staples Mill Road in Henrico County is slated to close July 11, the chain announced Tuesday.

“This difficult decision was made as the result of our ongoing assessment of the operating performance of our stores,” said Tom Lenkevich, Martin’s president.

As explained in the Richmond.com article, full service grocery stores with smaller footprints generally have a hard time keeping up with their larger rivals in sales. All current employees–both full and part-time–will be offered open positions in other Martin’s stores in the Richmond area.
