Richmond native Darius Jones is coming home this Sunday, December 16, with his Brooklyn-based group Little Women. Richmond’s own Glows in the Dark, led by guitarist Scott Burton, will open the show at Rumors Boutique.
Perhaps aptly dubbed “deranged psycho music” by one of the band member’s mothers, Little Women can be characterized by their aggressive interplay and musical cacophony. Sonic foundations often lie tastefully under a composed melody at the start of a tune, until the quartet suddenly splits into a frenzy of jagged free jazz. The intermittent moments of graceful chaos are perfectly aligned with sections of playful, spacious interaction between any or all of the players. Layers give Little Women a massive sound. At moments the music is constructed from low to high, with each layer interacting with and supplementing the others. At other times the layers seem to melt into each other, giving a cyclical feel — like the band is diminishing or growing in size. Little Women is sure to inspire, and seeing them perform live is bound to be a unique experience.
Glows in the Dark will be performing new works based on Swedish filmmaker Ingmar Bergman’s classic trilogy. Says GITD, “Featuring members of the bands Fight the Big Bull, Standards and Practices, No B.S., The Big Payback, and Ilad, Glows-in-the-Dark is a ‘full court press’ assault on musical conventions. A sound forged from a million and one influences, and honed under the watchful eyes of the true-believer. Jazz and Folk as seen through the forward-looking veil of the avant garde.”
Rumors Boutique is located at 404 N. Harrison St., RVA. All ages, $5.
