The November/December issue of Richmond Magazine’s stand-alone home and living publication, R*HOME, has a lengthy article on one of North Side’s hidden communities — the 24 homes built around a shared courtyard that make up Laburnum Court.

…when it was first built in 1919, Laburnum Court was way ahead of its time. Equipped with “all the modern conveniences” of early 20th-century life, Laburnum Court was one of Richmond’s earliest condominium complexes.

Developed by Joseph Bryan’s Laburnum Corporation, Laburnum Court’s 24 homes were built around a commonly owned courtyard. A central coal-fired heating plant provided heat to all the homes, and residents were able to purchase electricity at a reduced, group rate…
