Yesterday Coach Dave Robbins announced his retirement. Since he’s 65, it’s not unusual that he should retire. However, since Robbins has put up such impressive numbers in his 30 years of coaching Virginia Union University’s men’s basketball team, 65 is not a number that stands out much.

Since moving from Thomas Jefferson High School to Union (in 1978), Robbins has won three Division II national championships; he’s won 13 conference (CIAA) titles; his overall record has been 713-194.

Robbins will be replaced as head coach by his longtime assistant, Willard Coker. It’s doubtful anyone will ever equal his numbers. Only four other men have won as many games at the D-II level.
