For those of you who haven’t heard, Giz Bowe has stepped down as Jazz Director after a good long run. He did an awesome job, and we really appreciate the time, effort, and love he put into it.

But now there is a lot of jazz coming into the station that’s not getting any love.

My question to you is, who would be interested in overseeing the jazz collection?

Main Jazz Director duties:

  • Managing new jazz as it is received at the station– opening the jazz director mail, deciding what among it to add to the collection, making sure what is added gets reviewed
  • Responding to email from jazz promoters– promoters write the jazz director email address seeking acknowledgment that their cd’s have been received, and wanting to know how we like them
  • Charting new jazz releases– since Mr Jazz is the only jazz show right now, that is basically checking what among he has played is a new release and submitting it to CMJ once a week
  • Managing the jazz shelves– keeping the jazz shelves organized

Those are just the basics that keep the collection from stagnating. There is room for more if you wanted, anything from seeking out new labels to getting jazz artists to perform at the station, encouraging dj’s to play more jazz to getting the station more involved in the Richmond jazz scene.

This is a good chance for anyone with an interest in jazz to beef up their knowledge. Being a music director is awesome– it’s like subscribing to Columbia House… only you don’t have to pay and the music is good!

Anyone interested, please give me a shout.

    I’m way interested, though

    a) I don’t live in Richmond, and
    b) I would alienate many listeners by making way for fourth quarter 20th and early 21st century progress.

Seems that people are still not comfortable with music that is now 40+ years old…
