Henry Loundes and other Petersburg, VA stoneware, coins, stamps, pocket watches, baseball cards and more at Motley’s October 29th Sportsman’s Auction.

Many of the guns and related items in this auction are from the collection of the late Fairfax Davis, an avid sportsman and collector who lived in the 18th-century home “Greenlands” in historic Hanover, VA. Featured are many notable examples of long guns, including two Parker VH grade shotguns and an exposed hammer Parker; a beautiful L.C. Smith 20ga double barrel; a 16ga and a 20 ga Fox Sterlingworth; 3 early Kentucky type rifles; Browning’s to include several A5’s; as well as a Citori and a Lightning. The auction will also feature several early Winchesters, including a model 1892 in .44 W.C.F., a model 1890 and a model 1873, plus several others.

For the military enthusiast there are multiple Civil War era percussion pistols, including several rare Remington Beal’s model pistols, reportedly of which less than 1,000 were made; a Remington Smoot; several Colts and more. For the WWI and WWII collectors there is a multitude of long guns, plus a Colt model 1911A1; two M-1 Garand’s; a pair of model 1903 Springfield’s; several German and Japanese military rifles; plus a beautiful German Luger with holster and accessories, just as it was brought home by a WWII veteran.

Modern sporting arms will also be represented, as will reloading supplies and related items.

The Sportsman’s portion of the auction will not only include firearms but also gold and silver coins; stamps including a complete set of duck stamps from 1934-1979; a great selection of pocket watches including Tiffany & Co. and Tissot, vintage and modern designer men’s wristwatches; a selection of early comic books from the 1950’s and 60’s; a collection of early baseball cards including Mickey Mantle and Ted Williams; Coke and other advertising; musical instruments; Civil War and WWII artifacts and ephemera; native American artifacts; slave related letters and more.

For the autograph collectors in the crowd there are two that are sure to spark bidding, both of which were uncovered at the Fairfax Davis homestead. Found was a letter signed by Texan Samuel Houston in responding to correspondence inviting him to speak at a Masonic Lodge. Also featured is an 1868-dated report card from Washington & Lee College signed by none other than Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee.

Another special piece that is sure to be hotly contested in this sale is a piece of stoneware from the legendary Loundes Manufactory in Petersburg, VA. This ca. 1840’s crock was consigned by a lady who was cleaning out her grandparents’ home in Buckingham County, VA and found it along with other stoneware in a crawl space under this early home. Remarkably there is no apparent damage to the piece, despite the fact that they are usually found having chips and cracks from use over the years. Other Petersburg marked stoneware, plus Strasburg stoneware, will be included in this auction.

Mark Motley, president of the 41-year-old Motleys Auction & Realty Group said, “This is one of the most diverse offerings of guns and memorabilia we have ever had the pleasure to sell”.

The first portion of the auction will feature the new contents of a northern VA million-dollar model home that was completely furnished as a showplace for the custom builder. Due to the decline of the housing market, the home and contents are up for sale. A good selection of foxhunt and Civil War themed artwork will be offered, as well as a collection of Suter’s handmade furniture and multiple estate vehicles including a 2001 GMC 2500 pickup truck, a 1974 XJ12L Jaguar and a 1974 Plymouth Road Runner, the last two in need of restoration.

The auction will begin at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, October 29th. All items are viewable by October 22nd at www.motleys.com. The gallery will be open to preview all lots October 27th and 28th from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Items can also be previewed the day of the sale starting at 10 a.m.
