Henrico County ponders closing schools during portion of UCI World Championships

Will Henrico County follow Hanover’s lead and close schools during part of The Big Bike Race™?

From the Richmond Times-Dispatch:

It’s not just snow that can cancel school.

The Hanover County Public Schools could be closed Sept. 23 because of the 2015 UCI Road World Championships, and Henrico County schools might be as well.

Hanover students will give up their Columbus Day holiday, originally scheduled for Oct. 12, as a makeup day, according to Chris R. Whitley, county schools spokesman. Students and teachers will be off.

The Henrico School Board will hear a proposal Thursday to turn Sept. 23 from a half day for students into a holiday. Staff would spend a full day on planning and development on the 23rd.

What do you think? Is it prudent for schools to close during part of the races to minimize disruptions and to avoid road closures, or an overreaction?

I don’t think it’s a bad idea, it MAY help with roads but I also think it would give families an extra chance to go view the races and participate in the event (although that would lead to more traffic).
