Henrico authorities remind motorists to drive carefully near schools

Police remind drivers to slow down and proceed with caution as the first week of school begins.

Slow down, pay attention, and drive with caution this afternoon and the rest of the week. That’s the message from Henrico County authorities, who also remind motorists to build in extra commuting time on the way into work, as schools go back into session and traffic patterns may be changed.

“Henrico Police take the safety of school students very seriously, so drivers can expect to see an increased police presence on roads starting on the first day of school,” said Henrico Police Captain Linda Toney.

“Officers will be enforcing all applicable laws to include speeding, seatbelt enforcement, and school bus signal violations, with special attention to traffic on roads surrounding Henrico County Schools. Additionally, Henrico Officers will be conducting high visibility enforcement in school zones across the County over the next several weeks.”

Police also offer these helpful safety tips and guidelines:

Slow down. All school zones are posted with reduced speed limits during the morning and afternoon hours.
Follow at a safe distance from other vehicles.
Watch for students and pedestrians as they walk to school or bus stops.
Watch for School Crossing Guards as they assist children crossing the street.
Buckle up not only yourself, but also your child. Remember: “Click It or Ticket!”
Be alert to school buses stopping to load or unload children. Motorists observed passing a stopped school bus will be charged with reckless driving.

“One of our goals is to educate motorists to follow simple safety rules while driving,” Captain Toney continued. “This will help make our roads safer for schoolchildren and for all motorists.”
