The Azalea Garden in Bryan Park has been a fixture in the City of Richmond for more than 50 years. The beautiful colors of the garden’s 450,000 plus azalea bushes draw thousands of visitors to the park every spring.

Over time, some of the azalea beds have become overgrown by weeds. With limited resources for our parks the city is looking for some help from citizens in order to keep the gardens as beautiful as they can be.

The City of Richmond is excited to announce a new program to revitalize and maintain the Azalea Garden in Bryan Park. The Department of Public Works in partnership with the Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities and the Richmond Sheriff’s Department is looking for volunteers to weed the beds and lay down mulch in order to return the garden to its full beauty.

The Department of Public Works will provide hand tools; including rakes, shovels, wheel barrows, hand pruners, etc. A boom truck will be on hand to remove debris. Volunteers should wear appropriate work clothes (long sleeves and long pants) and bring gloves, hats and any other protective gear they wish to use.

Individuals and organizations who adopt a bed commit to tending their beds at least twice a year including the Adopt-a-Bed kick-off event on November 3, 2007, at 10 am.
