Hark! My Tree Is Bare and Sad!

I am in love with Christmas. It tastes good, smells good, looks good, and no matter how jaded I get I still succumb to that feeling of excitement, like Santa is DEFINITELY going to give me that NES I’ve been begging for for 20 years…2007 is my year! Some folks say, “It is such a […]

I am in love with Christmas. It tastes good, smells good, looks good, and no matter how jaded I get I still succumb to that feeling of excitement, like Santa is DEFINITELY going to give me that NES I’ve been begging for for 20 years…2007 is my year!

Some folks say, “It is such a shame when Christmas decorations go up in stores right after Halloween!” Not me. If I had my way, they’d go up in June. I don’t care. I love it. Last year my future husband and I got it together and bought a tree, but what nobody reminded us was, trees aren’t nearly as fun without ornaments, and when you’re just starting out, you don’t have the advantage of a lifetime’s worth of ornaments lying around in a carefully marked box.

My mom had given me some through the years, but when you’re in college, you are like, “Sigh, thanks Mom, FOR NOTHING.” How I’d like to go back and shake 20 year old me by the lapels, because I have no idea where any of those suddenly invaluable trinkets are. So if you’re like me and you’re starting your Christmas from scratch, you might be interested in the vast selection of reasonably-priced adorable ornaments and decorations that Urban Outfitters (?!) is currently offering. They keep putting these things on sale, so check back often.

And if you’ve got some time on your hands, you should check out Etsy.com’s ornament selection. For those of you not addicted to shopping online, Etsy is a site upon which crafty people can sell their crafty wares while eliminating the middle man. It takes a little commitment to delve into their overwhelming selection of stuff, but once you find a seller whose taste you like, you can look at the sellers they like, and the sellers THEY like, and so on until you’ve got a nice little cadre of favorites to stalk whenever they post something new.

Got any more good sites (or good local stores) whose ornaments you’d like to recommend? Comment, please. I am trying to build memories, here.

  1. Every year since I’ve been alive my mother has given me an ornament. When I got married she gives both my wife and I ornaments.

So we have a lot and they are amazing and meaningful.

  2. Tell her if she puts me on her ornament list, I will put her on my bread list.

  3. Anyone know where the tree farm folks are setting up shop this year? The outfit that wraps your selected tree in a net that makes it easy to carry your find back home on the roofrack of a little ole sedan, and used to be out in Short Pump on Broad opposite the Walmart/Target/Home Depot, more or less.

  4. I know our church is helping out with one over in Manchester somewhers I think?

  5. Hey there– when we were starting out 3 years ago, I bought some sparkly ting and a nice quality bunch of fake crimson poinsettias to festively top our tree with.

Then I used some gold & crimson ribbon and a separate gold mesh wire ribbon as “garland”. Our ornaments consisted of “sugared” fruit I had bought on sale from Michael’s. I used the old glue gun to make a loop out of sturdy gold, twisted ribbon and then tied a little bow to glue onto the fruit to hide where I’d glued the loop. Inexpensive and pretty as you please.

You may also want to check Garden Ridge for glass bulbs in bulk to add more texture and color to your tree. I also stuff the little branches studded with “berries” into the tree for more color and visual interest.

Each year, I’ve been adding more and was able to pick up a few fancier baubles finally this year. So, my advice, pick a color & theme and then you can build on it from year to year.

    Hope that helps!
