Gunman detained at J. Sargeant Reynolds downtown

The gunman at the downtown J. Sargeant Reynolds campus has been detained.

Earlier this morning a man was reported with a gun at the downtown J. Sargeant Reyolds campus. The suspect has now been detained.

J. Sargeant Reynolds reports a suspect has been detained after reports of a gunman near the community college’s downtown Richmond campus.

Richmond police say there is no active shooter and no one has been shot, however a man with a backpack and camouflage clothing entered the building and was heard making threats, according to sources. The man is known to police and is now being questioned, however sources say they aren’t certain whether he was alone.

The campus remains on lockdown and a search of the building continues. Officials say for anyone in the building at 7th and Jackson streets to remain sheltered in place. Police ask everyone to avoid the area near the campus and those nearby to stay inside and secure their doors. Police say to call (804) 523-5911 for help.
