Alexis Bennett wants to get you into the VCU basketball game on Saturday night for half-price. All you have to do is bring a children’s book to give her, so she can give it to a child. It’s all part of her International Baccalaureate program project — Reach Out and Read. Bennett is a sophomore at Henrico High.
“ROR is a national non-profit program that is working to make literacy promotion a standard part of pediatric primary care, so that children grow up with books and a love of reading,” said Alexis. “ROR trains medical professionals to advise parents about the importance of reading aloud to their children, and gives books to children at pediatric visits, with a special focus on underserved children growing up in poverty.”

…VCU will offer half-price general-admission tickets in exchange for every children’s book brought to Saturday’s 7:30 p.m. men’s basketball game against Longwood at the Siegel Center.
The books will go to Reach Out and Read (ROR), a nonprofit organization that promotes early literacy by providing books for pediatric waiting rooms or giving them to underprivileged kids at checkups.
“Because of her drive and creativity, she will be able to donate a couple of hundred books to the organization,” said Scott Secules, VCU’s senior associate athletic director for external affairs.
