County Departments Being Recognized For Environmental Efforts

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA – Two Chesterfield County departments will be recognized during the Board of Supervisors meeting today for their efforts to improve the county’s impact on the environment. The Chesterfield County Department of Utilities’ Falling Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant, has been awarded the Department of Environmental Quality’s Exemplary Environmental Enterprise, or E3, certification in the Virginia Environmental Excellence Program. The E3 designation certifies that a facility has fully implemented an environmental management system (EMS) and pollution prevention program, and continues to demonstrate environmental quality enhancement and compliance. Both of Chesterfield County’s wastewater treatment plants are now E3-certified. In 2004, the Proctors Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant was the first wastewater facility in Virginia to achieve the E3 level of environmental excellence. Waste and Resource Recovery, a division of the General Services Department, has recently obtained the ISO 14001 certification. The International Organization for Standardization, or ISO, is a worldwide nongovernmental federation of 156 national-standards bodies and is the world’s largest developer of standards. The ISO 14001 certification is voluntary and is recognized by trading nations and trade-regulating organizations. ISO standards make the development, manufacture and supply of products and services more efficient, safer and cleaner. ISO also provides governments with a technical base for health, safety and environmental legislation. Chesterfield County is currently the only county in the United States that has departments that are ISO 14001-certified for the Environmental Management System, or EMS, development and implementation. These efforts to implement countywide environmental- management systems adds support to the county’s strategic goal “to be responsible protectors of the environment.”
