Sixth District Councilwoman Ellen Robertson and Third District Councilman Chris Hilbert are joining with the Richmond Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities to challenge citizens to “be the change” by volunteering a few hours of their time on Saturday, January 24, to help with a city cleanup project in North Richmond:

Councilmembers Robertson and Hilbert, the Richmond Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities and a number of City departments are sponsoring the cleanup of the area that runs adjacent to Cannon Creek along Richmond-Henrico Turnpike between Valley Road and East Brookland Park Boulevard in Richmond’s Northside. The City is working to build a bicycle and pedestrian trail through the Cannon Creek Greenway that could be linked to the East Coast Greenway, which is being built in sections from Main to Florida, and to the Virginia Capital Trail, which would link Richmond to Williamsburg and Jamestown.

This project has the potential of changing the face of this area of Richmond; however, the first step is to remove the debris from the ravine that has been used at times as an illegal dump site.

Citizens interested in volunteering are to call the Richmond Dept. of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities to sign up, at 804.646.5944. And, are reminded to wear layered clothing and sturdy shoes, and bring work gloves for trash pickup.

The clean-up takes place from 8:30 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 24. Volunteers should meet at the Virginia National Guard Armory at 500 Dove Street, at the intersection of Dove Street and Richmond-Henrico Turnpike. For more information, contact Christy Everson at the Department of Parks at 804-646-5944.
