As a result of financial pressure on Richmond’s budget, the Department of Public Utilities will condense its leaf collection program — originally slated to be tackled twice this winter:

The City’s Department of Public Works is implementing a new leaf collection program that will save the City an estimated $291,000 annually in human and equipment resources. The leaf collection program will begin December 1 and run through January 30.

The new program will cut vacuum service from a 22 week, two-cycle program, to a 10 week, one-cycle program. The Department has determined that starting the collection later in the season will make it feasible to do one vacuum collection instead of two, since the majority of leaves in the City fall in December and January.

In addition, the City is encouraging residents to use biodegradable brown paper bags for leaf collection. During regular trash collection, up to six bags can be placed out for pickup, but the leaf collection program allows an unlimited number of bags to be picked up from each home.
