CaryTown is truly a magnificent place. The sheer quantity of independent shops makes it leaps and bounds better than the corporate malls in Short Pump and Stony Point. A stroll down Cary Street on a lazy weekend afternoon is both fun and refreshing. If it’s not broken, don’t fix it, right?
Maybe CaryTown is broken. Wait and hear me out. Over the past few years we’ve witnessed massive turnover in the shops and restaurants. While most spaces are filled with tenants, it’s concerning to see so much change in such a short period of time. While there are many examples of long-term success, there is an equal number of counter-examples. (Toymaker of Williamsburg, Growers Exchange, Rostov’s Coffee & Tea, Richmond Piano, and Rolly Polly just to name a few.) (more…)
