Player of the Week:

Will Thomas, George Mason, Sr., F, 6-7, 230, Baltimore, Md./Mount St. Joseph

Thomas repeats as CAA Player of the Week after averaging 18.3 points, 8.7 rebounds and 2.7 assists to earn all-tournament honors at the Old Spice Classic. The senior forward recorded a team-high 18 points, seven rebounds and four assists in an 87-77 win over 18th-ranked Kansas State, had 15 points and eight boards in an 84-76 loss to No. 20 Villanova and finished with 22 points and 11 rebounds as Mason beat South Carolina 69-68 to place third in the tournament. Thomas shot 55.6% from the floor and made 14-of-17 at the FT line.

Non-Conference Action:

The CAA has posted a 29-24 (.547) record in non-conference action through the first two weeks of the season. The league has combined for an impressive 16-2 mark at home and is a solid 7-5 on neutral courts, but is 6-17 on the road. Thirteen of the 24 losses have come against squads from the ACC, Big East, Big Ten and SEC and eight were against teams ranked in the top 25.

Double Your Pleasure:

Ten CAA players have combined for 19 double-doubles in the first two weeks of the season. Mason’s Will Thomas, Georgia State’s Rashad Chase and Towson’s Junior Hairston have already recorded three double-doubles, while UNCW’s Vladimir Kuljanin Northeastern’s Nken Ojoughboh and Drexel’s Frank Elegar have two.

VCU:

The Rams (3-2) snapped a two-game losing streak by cruising past Elon 79-61 last Saturday. VCU shot 59.2% from the floor, made 7-of-8 from 3-point range and turned the ball over only 10 times in the victory.

Senior guard Jamal Shuler topped VCU with 17 points on 7-of-8 FG shooting, while senior forward Wil Fameni scored 12 points and junior guard Eric Maynor added 10 points and a team-high seven assists. Shuler was 3-for-3 from beyond the arc against Elon and is shooting 44% for the season. Freshman center Larry Sanders played well off the bench with nine points, six rebounds and four blocked shots. Freshman guard Ed Nixon, who had only scored two points in VCU’s previous three games, broke loose for nine points on 4-of-5 FG shooting in 19 minutes of action.

The Rams are forcing opponents into 17.0 turnovers per game.
