CAA Men’s Basketball Co-Players of the Week:
Matt Janning, Northeastern, Jr. G, 6-4, 195; Danny Sumner, Wm. & Mary, Jr., F, 6-7, 215

CAA Rookie of the Week:
Troy Franklin, Towson, Fr., G, 5-11, 160

Conference Notes:

CAA Solid In Non-Conference Action: The CAA is off to a 23-18 start (.561) against non-conference competition during the early part of the regular season. More impressively, 11 of the 23 victories have come on either neutral or road courts, including Northeastern’s 70-66 win at Providence. Of the CAA’s 18 losses, seven have come against teams from the Big 10, Big East or ACC.

Young Guns: Young players are making an impact offensively in the CAA this season as there are only two seniors among the league’s top 16 in scoring. Three of the league’s top four scorers are sophomores – Hofstra’s Charles Jenkins (23.7 ppg), Delaware’s Alphonso Dawson (21.8 ppg) and UNCW’s Chad Tomko (21.5 ppg). Among the top 16 in points, there are seven juniors, five sophomores, two freshmen and two seniors.

Piling Up The Points: Five CAA players have scored 30 or more points in the first 10 days of the regular season after just seven reached the 30-point mark all of last year. William & Mary’s David Schneider (31) and Danny Sumner (30) became just the second duo in school history to reach the mark in the same game last Saturday as the Tribe fell to Navy in triple overtime. Also scoring 30 or more this season are UNCW’s Chad Tomko, Hofstra’s Charles Jenkins and Delaware’s Jawan Carter.

Working Overtime: CAA teams have already been involved in seven overtime contests this season and are 4-3 in those games. Sixteen contests have been decided by six points or less or in overtime thus far, and the conference has a combined record of 11-5 in those games.

Tournament Time: Five of the CAA’s 12 teams are participating in tournaments this week. James Madison plays Loyola (Md.) and Florida Atlantic on Monday and Tuesday in the consolation round of the NIT Season Tip-Off in Davidson, N.C. Towson is participating in the Hoop Group Classic at the Palestra in Philadelphia, where it will meet #23 Villanova on Friday and either Penn State or Rhode Island on Saturday. UNC Wilmington is in the South Padre Invitational where it will meet N.C. Central on Friday and either Texas A&M CC or Jackson State on Saturday. William & Mary is in the Liberty Tournament where it plays S.C. State on Friday and either Liberty or Coker on Saturday. VCU is in the Cancun Challenge where it takes on New Mexico on Saturday and either Vanderbilt or Drake on Sunday.

Two CAA Teams In Mid-Major Top 25 Poll: A pair of CAA teams are ranked in the latest Mid-Major Top 25 poll released by CollegeInsider.com on Nov. 17. VCU is ranked #6 in the poll for the second straight week, while Old Dominion moved up two spots to #13. George Mason, Northeastern, Georgia State and Hofstra were among other teams receiving votes. A new poll will be out later on Monday.

Double Digits Streak Alive: Three CAA players are riding impressive double-figure scoring streaks. Northeastern guard Matt Janning is on a 23-game streak of scoring double digits, while VCU guard Eric Maynor has tallied double figures in 19 games in a row and Hofstra guard Charles Jenkins has scored double figures in 18 straight games.
