CAA Player of the Week
Will Thomas, Sr., F, 6-7, 230, George Mason
Thomas averaged 18.0 points and 12.5 rebounds in leading George Mason to a pair of victories last week. The senior forward scored 18 points and grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds in a 67-56 win over Dayton and tallied a team-best 18 points and seven caroms in a 56-47 triumph over Cleveland State. Thomas shot 66.7 percent from the floor and also had five assists and three blocks.
Geo. Mason (3-0 overall, 0-0 in CAA)
The Patriots improved to 3-0 to start the season for the first time since 1980-81 with victories over Cleveland State (56-47) and Dayton (67-56). Mason continued to be outstanding defensively, limiting CSU to 37.3 percent FG shooting and Dayton to 36.4 percent. The Patriots are holding foes to 52.0 ppg and 35.1 percent shooting for the season, and are also out-rebounding opponents by a league-leading 9.7 boards per game. Mason will be looking for the first 4-0 start in school history when it meets Kansas State Thursday on ESPN2 in the Old Spice Classic.
James Madison (2-0 overall, 0-0 in CAA)
The Dukes rolled past Dartmouth 72-57 last Saturday to improve to 2-0 for the first time since 2004-05. Junior guard Abdulai Jalloh netted a team-high 22 points, including a 10-of-11 effort from the free throw line. Senior forward Terrance Carter recorded his first double-double of the season with 14 points, a team-high 11 rebounds and five assists.
Old Dominion (2-1 overall, 0-0 in CAA)
The Monarchs split a pair of tough non-conference tests, rolling past Toledo 66-35 before falling 66-53 at Clemson. ODU led Toledo 29-11 at the half and never let the Rockets get closer than 15 during the final 20 minutes. The Monarchs broke a school record for fewest points allowed and also set a new school mark by limiting Toledo to 21.7 percent FG shooting. Senior center Sam Harris blocked seven shots in each game last week and tied a career-high with nine rebounds versus Toledo.
ODU hosts Iona on Tuesday.
VCU (2-2 overall, 0-0 in CAA)
The Rams placed fourth in the eight-team Puerto Rico Tip-Off, edging Houston 73-72 in the opener before losing to eventual champ Miami (69-63) and 18th-ranked Arkansas (70-60). Junior guard Eric Maynor averaged 15.0 ppg. in the tournament and led all players with 17 assists. He poured in 27 points against Miami, including 22 in the second half. Senior guard Jamal Shuler scored 16 of his team-high 20 points in the second half versus Houston, including a three-point play with 1:08 remaining that put VCU ahead to stay. Senior forward Michael Anderson netted a career-high 18 points against Houston and had 16 in the setback to Arkansas. He also averaged 7.0 rebounds over the three games. Freshman forward Lance Kearse contributed 6.3 ppg. in limited action off the bench.
VCU hosts Elon on Saturday.
Wm. & Mary (0-2 overall, 0-0 in CAA)
The Tribe dropped its second straight road game to a nationally ranked opponent, losing 66-47 at No. 21 N.C. State last Thursday. Senior forward Laimis Kisielius topped W&M in scoring for the second consecutive game with 12 points, while sophomore guard David Schneider chipped in nine points and a team-best six rebounds. The Tribe, which was beaten at No. 5 Georgetown to open the year, continues its season-opening three-game road swing at Wagner on Tuesday.
