To win a place in the annual Virginia Association of Pupil Transportation calendar might be considered a great honor for a budding artist. This year, students of the Petersburg City Public Schools (PCPS) won six of the twelve spots – fully half the calendar.

Wayneque Hines-Davis, Amiliyan Webb and Paradise Bowen locked up the Kindergarten to second grade ranking. Zaiera Cutler and Rafael Taboada won two of the three possible spots in the third to fifth grade category. And fifth grader Alexander Studivant drew up a win as well.

All the PCPS winners this year were from R. E. Lee Elementary School on the city’s east side.

The young artists had to come up with a colorful poster that expressed the importance of obeying the “stop arm,” the extendable sign that school bus drivers use to warn other traffic to halt for children, said Floyd Miles, PCPS Transportation Director.

Rafael’s selection, for example, features the expected school bus and students motif, but places them in a fall setting, with a pumpkin patch and falling leaves adding beauty to the scene.

“I was proud to stand in front of the state of Virginia and have our students win six awards in one night,” Miles said.

This continues a long tradition of Petersburg students winning a place in the calendar.

The students at Lee learn art from Dewey Cashwell, who is known around the district for the colorful murals he has painted inside several of the Petersburg City Public Schools.

The contest winners were honored in front of the Board of the Petersburg City Public Schools during its October meeting.
