Arthur Ashe statue on Monument Avenue shines following city cleanup

The City of Richmond took action to beautify the statue following a tweetstorm from former governor L. Douglas Wilder.

From the Richmond Times-Dispatch:

The plants at the base of the Arthur Ashe statue in Richmond have been cleaned up after a series of tweets from former Gov. L. Douglas Wilder that chided the city for its lack of upkeep.

Grant Neely, chief of staff for Mayor Dwight C. Jones, posted a tweet Friday thanking staff members from the city’s Public Works Department, whom he credited with cleaning up the monument Friday at 6 a.m.

Neely and Tammy D. Hawley, press secretary for Jones, did not respond immediately to requests for comment Friday.

In the time since the above report, the city also planted flowers around the statue, adding a splash of color to the cleanup efforts.

Thank goodness. I travel on Monument every day to/from work and it was the least kept up out of all the monuments that I pass. Honestly I was planning on heading out there in the next week or so to at least remove the weeds and tidy it up myself.
