Area’s largest youth road race takes place this weekend in Short Pump

The 6th annual C&F Bank/Lite 98 Short Pump Mile & Express Fun Run takes place Sunday morning.

The area’s largest timed youth road race is back this weekend at Short Pump Town Center for its sixth year.

This Sunday, September 28th, the 6th annual C&F Bank/Lite 98 Short Pump Mile & Express Fun Run takes place behind the mall, near American Family Fitness.

It’s expected to be the largest since the race began in 2009, drawing an estimated 1,100 kids.

Kids age 18 and under will have the opportunity to participate in a one-mile run, and kids age five and under can run in the 400 meter non-timed Fun Run.

In addition to running their own race, runners’ involvement contributes to their school’s chance to win a St. Mary’s For Kids School Participation Award.

The top five schools with the greatest number of participants will earn a total of $2,000 for their physical fitness programs. Over 150 individual awards will be given to top age group finishers.

Every runner will receive a participation medal, shirt, and refreshments.

Proceeds from the race support NOVA’s outreach programs, which teach area kids to swim.

The first heat is at 7:45 AM, with the Fun Run leaving the starting gate at approximately 10:45 AM, according to organizers.
