Peter Bacque at the Richmond Times-Dispatch profiles Melody Barnes, a former Northside resident and current director of President Obama’s Domestic Policy Council:

Her parents, Charles and Frances Barnes, still live on North Side, and Barnes was in town to speak last night at the awards banquet of the Metropolitan Business League’s Virginia Business Empowerment Conference at the downtown Richmond Marriott.

The league works to promote minority and small-business development in the Richmond region.

As the president’s domestic policy adviser, Melody Barnes, 44, is the highest-ranking Richmonder in the Obama administration.

When she first sat down in her new office, Barnes was overwhelmed.

“It was that feeling,” she said. “‘Oh, my God, I’m working for the president of the United States in the West Wing of the White House.’”

“I had that feeling for about 45 seconds,” she recalled yesterday, “and then it was time to go to work.”
