Who is Tom Browne?
Though probably best known for his commercial hit “Funkin’ for Jamaica”, Tom Browne has received awards
and much critical acclaim for his “warm trumpet” sound in both contemporary and classic Jazz. As a regular on the New York Jazz scene he learned first hand from Jazz giants such as Woody Shaw and Freddie Hubbard. His debut release “Browne Sugar” (1979) dominated the Jazz charts for many weeks. His follow-up records “Love Approach” and “Magic” each earned gold status. He received awards for Best Instrumentalist, Best Jazz Cross-over Artist, Best Jazz Artist-Trumpet and Best Jazz Solo Album from Billboard. Browne took a hiatus from music in the 80’s and became a commercial airline pilot. He returned to the Jazz scene recording several CDs throughout the nineties in a “straight ahead Jazz” setting with Ron Carter, Idris Muhammad and Billy Childs which received outstanding Jazziz Magazine reviews.
Browne, currently touring with the Superstars of Jazz Fusion featuring Roy Ayers, and Richmond’s Lonnie Liston Smith, is also preparing for a “Tribute to Miles Davis” Tour featuring Patrice Rushen, Everette Harp, Wayne Henderson, N’dugu Chancler and Charles “Buster” Williams.
Richmond Jazz Society’s trio featuring Dr. Weldon Hill on piano will accompany.
