5 Things for Families: Music, design, growing families, teens doing good, and more!

Here are a few things you can do this weekend when you’re not busy honoring the woman who gave you life.

1. RVA East End Festival

Richmond Symphony, No BS! Brass, and Desiree Roots kick off this three-day celebration of the uniqueness and diversity of Richmond’s East End. Other performers include Chimborazo Elementary School Choir, Richmond Symphony Youth Orchestra Program/MLK Boys & Girls Club of Metro Richmond Showcase, One Voice Chorus, and… like a zillion others. Food trucks will also set up shop to keep you and yours fed and watered as you enjoy the music. And the best part? The proceeds from this event will go to support and enhance music education in Richmond Public Schools who call the East End home.

2. Teen Stylin’: Engineered

Over the last semester more than 70 designers in grades six through 12 have been hard at work creating one-of-a-kind, wearable pieces of art–and you get to come check out their final products! Each piece incorporates elements of mechanical and electrical engineering that are sure to leave you questioning what the heck you were doing during your teen years.

3. Nurture RVA Birth & Baby Fair

Got a bun in the oven? Planning to have a bun in the oven? Has your bun recently left your oven? Then this is the place for you! Meet with local businesses, care providers, and organizations dedicated to serving new and growing families. Bring a pack of diapers for Capital Diaper Bank with you¹ and you’ll be entered to a raffle boasting over $2500 in prizes!

4. Dora the Explorer at CMoR Central

“Swiper, no swiping!” and “SAY ‘BACKPACK!'” are two things still shouted in my house on a regular basis, and our kid is well beyond Dora-watching age. Dora is just a force that families can’t resist or escape…ever. Don’t fight it. Come on out and meet the adorable/shouty little lady–if you get there early enough, you might even be able to snag a meet ‘n’ greet ticket.

5. Teen Volunteer Fair

Got a teen looking to fill volunteer hours for school/give back to his or her community? Representatives from local organizations will be on-hand to share details on volunteer opportunities around town and how to get The Youths involved.
