The Richmond Times-Dispatch reported recently that North Richmond’s 4th Precinct has a few hundred anti-theft devices that lock car steering wheels available for area residents:

Vehicle thefts generally are down across the city, but a recent upswing in thefts from vehicles in some areas of Richmond has police warning residents to be more vigilant about their property.

To help reduce the number of vehicle thefts in the 4th Precinct, officers have been giving out free anti-theft devices that lock over steering wheels.

The device, called The Club, won’t help folks who leave keys in the car, but it could cut down on other thefts…

… [Lt. Timothy] Morley said the precinct has issued about 266 Clubs over the past two years and has about another 200 available.

The Clubs were purchased with a grant from the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police, Morley said. Other police sectors in the city also received grants, using the money for specific crime-fighting projects…

…To receive a free Club, which sells for about $30 or more in stores, residents should bring the vehicle registration to the 4th Precinct office at 107 S. 5th St. in downtown Richmond and fill out a form. The program targets 4th Precinct residents.

Morley advises residents to call (804) 646-4105 before coming to make sure an officer is there to help them.
