2008 Oscar Pick ’em

Test us, plebeian masses, in our annual Academy Award Pick ’em! This year marks the 80th award ceremony — which, coincidentally, is also the point spread.

It’s that time of year! You know, the time when a golden statuette erupts from Susan‘s chest and spews bloody popcorn (no butter) all over your sofa; this time is also known as “Oscar Season.”

Last year Justin, the Wife, Susan, and myself pitted our wits against each other in a battle the like of which the world has not seen since the Six-Day War. This year we are inviting you plebes to play along at home for the chance at winning this spectacular prize: two tickets to the West Hampton (if some awesome business wants to sponsor this contest, let us know ok?).

The details

The short of it: fill out this survey. Make sure you use your real email address so we can contact you and send you your sweet prize (should you win this impressive test of skill).

Each award category is worth a certain amount of points (full list to follow). The more high profile a category the more points it is worth. Justin, last year’s grandmaster, has this to say about a potential strategy:

Don’t neglect the small categories. Follow the NFL playoff advice of ESPN columnist Bill Simmons and don’t try to be a hero, just try to win. And lastly, drink four raw eggs for breakfast every morning. You’ll be a winner in no time.

The survey will run until February 19th. You can edit your responses at anytime until then, but I might jot them down JIC. As an FYI, dear readers, Virginia Center Commons still has most of the best picture nominees, and here is a handy list of the categories and nominees.

One more time in case you missed it: click here to fill out your pick ’em.

  1. Incidentally, the smell of movie popcorn makes me feel a little sick. Unfortunate, no?

I feel very sorry for you. Popcorn is maybe the best part about going to the movies. Unfortunatly in South Africa they don’t put butter on the movie popcorn! Not only do they not put butter on the popcorn- it’s not even an option. The plus side though is that movies here are only 42 rand which is about $6- maybe a little less.

  4. $6 for a movie? What better way to relive high school!

Don’t neglect Michael Clayton at the Byrd next week kids.
