Jamal Shuler’s red-hot shooting in a pair of critical conference victories was enough to earn the VCU senior his second Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week award Monday. Shuler will share the honor with George Mason’s Dre Smith.

Shuler [who hears “Shoo-oo” from VCU happy fans each time he hits a shot] averaged 23.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game to spark VCU to convincing victories over then-first place Delaware Jan. 16 and arch-rival Old Dominion Jan. 19.

 

The 6-4 guard drilled 10 3-pointers and shot 53 percent (10-of-19) from beyond the arc for the Rams. Shuler was 18-of-35 from the field overall. Against ODU, Shuler poured in 26 points and recorded his first career double-double when he tacked on a personal-best 11 rebounds in a 78-68 win. Shuler also ripped six steals in two games. Through 17 games, Shuler ranks eighth in the CAA in scoring (15.6 ppg) and is the league’s fourth most accurate 3-point shooter (.432).

 

VCU, alone atop the CAA standings with a 6-1 league mark, travels to Hempstead , N.Y. to take on Hofstra Wed., Jan. 23, at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast on MASN.
