In “Not Acquiescing,” Tameka Norris weaves together autobiographical references and wider cultural narratives that engage questions of gender, race, and socio-economics. Norris’s post-Katrina-inspired works invite the audience to consider the cultural landscape of New Orleans in the aftermath of the hurricane. Themes of reinvention and resilience run deep!

ART 180

ART 180’s exhibition space, Atlas, is a holiday market throughout December, featuring fine art, crafts, and some other handmade stuff by artists who have either led programs or otherwise supported the work of ART 180 in the past. Plus, products created by ART 180 folks will also be available, including a 2016 desk calendar! Check out the opening party for the Atlas Holiday Market tonight from 6:00 – 9:00 PM. Swing by at 7:30 PM, and catch ART 180 teens performing new poems collaboratively written in a recent program.

Candela Books Gallery

Candela Books Gallery has six books! Did you know that? Its sixth,Direct Positive, is by Richmond native and fine art photographer, Willie Anne Wright. Beginning in the 1970s, Wright’s moved from painting to pinhole photography, and the book gives us a look at her exploration of Cibachrome color material and her production of unique direct positive images. The gallery celebrates this release with an exhibition that will last all month long.

In the Gellman Room: the Focus Group Camera Club’s color and black-and-white images of a variety of subjects. In the Dooley Foyer: “Russian Ornaments and Children’s Books.” In the Dooley Hall: oil paint and plein air by Richmond artist Chris Ludke. In the 2nd Floor Gallery: original pastels and acrylics transitioned into oil on canvas by Richmond artist/author Ronnie Godly. At tonight’s opening reception, thrill to the melodies of jazz pianist Neil Woodard!

“Glass in My Eye: Confessions of Reluctant Female-Hating Feminists” is a pretty sweet name for anything. This new theatre-making initiative revolving around women sharing their stories is right up our alley! Doors open at 9:45 PM with a bar. Tonight’s topic is “Tell us stories about that bad woman boss who should’ve had your back but didn’t.” And Come early to see Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill (click that link for our review, we loved it!) or come by after the show for the B-Word.

The Visual Art Studio presents the 16th Annual Art2go, with artistic gifts exhibition of small works, miniature art, sculpture, and fine art crafts in the Main Gallery, 7:00 – 10:00 PM. Music provided by My Son The Doctor (a band we truly love). Art2go changes throughout the exhibition, as they put up works to replace the ones that are bought! Pretty neat.
